How To Make Bathrooms Appear Larger

ARTICLES|October 12

Not all floor plans allow for large bathrooms, but thankfully it is possible to give the illusion of more space with a few inexpensive changes. It is expensive to renovate bathrooms so it is important to try and get it right the first time. This will help maximize space and introduce a whole new feel to the bathrooms in your home!

First, let’s tackle the layout. Most interior designers will tell you to put vanities in the corner, as one in the center often interrupts clear paths in the tight spaces of a bathroom. Leaving the center open gives a more open feel and will dramatically change how people perceive the space. In terms of the shower, post it on the other side of the bathroom from the vanity and include an outswinging door. Also, keep the door totally clear, which will add an extra ‘depth’ to the room.

Next, and perhaps most important is the lighting, a great way to expand the feel of the bathroom is using upward facing sconce lights, which will make the ceilings appear higher, something that everybody wants for their home. Using a light that has a high kelvin value will help out a lot too. This will create a warm feeling in the room and is less harsh on the eyes. This is especially important because bathrooms are often bright white and can reflect the light easily.

I can’t tell you how many people have asked me for advice on bathrooms after they have seen mine. I swear all that I did to create this effect was change the lighting and remove all unnecessary clutter in order to create a minimalist appeal.
